Important Facts About Liposuction

in Fat
Liposuction is a surgical cosmetic procedure that can help you get rid of those last ten pounds of fat that don't respond to exercise or diet. Sometimes those fatty cell deposits can firmly plant themselves in hard to remove locations like your face or under arms or that slight roll of belly fat and now liposuction is a viable option to get your body back.

This procedure can be done under general or local anesthesia either at the hospital or more likely the cosmetic surgeons own surgical center. This is a relatively simple operation in which the doctor will insert a cannula between the skin and muscle of the area to have fat removed and basically suction the fat out.

The entire procedure takes about two to five hours to perform depending on how many areas are worked on and how much fat is removed. The area where the incisions are will be slightly bruised and swollen but your recovery time is generally only a few days and any discomfort can easily be managed with pain medication.

The best candidates for liposuction are people who are realistic about the results. This surgery won't remove more than eight to ten pounds of fat so it is not a surgery for any one with serious ongoing weigh issues and your weight should be stabilized before you have the surgery. Liposuction is not a permanent weight loss procedure. Fatty deposits can come back to the same areas or other areas of your body if you don't control your eating habits and don't exercise. In fact many surgeons won't recommend this surgery for you if your weight is unstable because you will likely gain back the fat and be unhappy with the surgical results.

This isn't just a procedure for women anymore either. More and more men are starting to opt for plastic surgery to refine their overall appearance and liposuction is no exception to this rule. Since men's bodies are more fibrous than women's it can be more complicated and time consuming for the surgeon to suction out the fat deposits but overall men fare as well as women with positive results.

Since liposuction on men can take longer the cost may be higher than a woman's surgery but of course the price for any procedure will depend on a wide variety of factors including geographic location, the doctor's fees and whether or not the surgery is performed at the hospital or the doctor's own surgical center. If you feel you would be a good candidate for liposuction be sure to discuss your concerns and questions with your plastic surgeon and make your decision based on all of the facts.
